Andy Schleck has showed his great talent in this time-trial, catching all of the riders that have started before him except the sole Claude Wolter. A great performance from the rider of VC Roubaix, who has started very strong, being just 4 seconds slower than elite-rider Benoît Joachim on the first lap. On the second lap, he was a little bit less impressive (21'35"), but took another 1'05" to Claude Wolter and 1'01" to Benn Wurth. These two riders from Kayl were fighting for the silver medal and Wolter was fastest by just 3 seconds after having been 7 seconds better than Wurth on the first lap.
Report from the Under23 road-race:
km 0 Start is at 3 o'clock p.m. 19 riders line up for 9 laps (129 km), together with 35 elite riders.
1st lap Directly after the start, the riders have to face the most difficult part of the circuit: the climb of Hostert with an easier part in the beginning, a little downhill, an then the very steep final section. The race will take part on a larger course of 17,5 km (6 laps), and then on a smaller, local course of 8 km (3 more laps). The climb is to be taken each lap and the repetition of it, as well as the accelerations of the elite riders should make the race very tough.
1st lap 4 elite riders are in front with more than one minute of advantage on the peloton. The good thing for an espoir rider would be to take part in this group. That's the idea of Claude Wolter who attacks just at the end of the first lap.
2nd lap Wolter is joined in the lead by Joe Kirch. The two riders are trying to catch the 4 elite-riders in front of them but the gap increases. There are already two of the contestants for the podium in an early attack, but the big favourite Andy Schleck remains very calm in the bunch.
2nd lap The two leaders are 3 minutes behind the first elite-riders, but still have a minute of advance on the main group with the other Under23-riders.
4th lap The professionnal riders now show some reaction in the peloton, thereby taking the whole group back onto Wolter and Kirch. A new race begins ...
5th lap After an acceleration of Benoît Joachim on the climb, Andy Schleck is the only espoirs rider able to follow him. He now rides in a lead group together with 5 elite-riders.
5th lap Behind Schleck, the best riders are Benn Wurth, Gilles Hendel and Jacques Dahm.
6th lap Their gap to the leading rider of VC Roubaix is over 2 minutes now
6th lap Despite all accelerations in the leading group, Andy Schleck is able to follow the rythm. Behind him, Wurth and Dahm are now alone in the chase.
8th lap Schleck is taking his part of the work in the break, thus assuring his title. Just one more lap to go and his advance is of 4 minutes.
9th lap Andy Schleck drops out of his group withe 300 m to go to duly celebrate his title. In his first year in this category, he is double national champion, in the time-trial and the road race. This is promising ...
9th lap On the last straight line, Benn Wurth manages to drop Jacques Dahm for second place.
